Everything the Game of Thrones Cast Has Said of the Season 8 Plot

Things don't look so great for Sansa, Arya, and Daenerys.

WARNING: Spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8 ahead.

HBO is being more secretive than ever when it comes to Game of Thrones' upcoming eighth and final season. But, thanks to a few reports and hints from the cast in interviews, we have a vague idea of how the final episodes take shape. Here are the biggest hints we have so far.

The season premiere begins with Daenerys arriving to Winterfell.

Entertainment Weekly reports:

"Season 8 opens at Winterfell with an episode that contains plenty of callbacks to the show’s pilot. Instead of King Robert’s procession arriving, it’s Daenerys and her army. What follows is a thrilling and tense intermingling of characters—some of whom have never previously met, many who have messy histories—as they all prepare to face the inevitable invasion of the Army of the Dead."

We saw shots of Dany and Jon marching with their armies and arriving to the Stark stronghold in various Season 8 previews. The parallels between this episode and the first one in the show are apparent. Even Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) had to rewatch the first season after reading the script because "so much of it refers back to that season," she said in an interview.

This will be Khaleesi's first time at the Stark's home base. "She starts feeling pretty cocksure and confident, and then stuff happens," Emilia Clarke (Daenerys) told BAZAAR.com.

There's also plenty waiting for Jon at home. Most importantly, there's Samwell Tarly and Bran Stark, who recently discovered that Jon is Lyanna Stark's son with Rhaegar Targaryen, and therefore the heir to the Iron Throne. That should be a fun conversation—especially when he realizes he slept with his aunt.

Sansa isn't crazy about Dany's arrival.

Sansa and Arya Stark, who've reunited and executed Littlefinger, are at Winterfell. This will Jon and Arya's first time seeing each other since he left for the Night's Watch in Season 1. Fans have long been awaiting this reunion, and we already need tissues just thinking about it.

While his return may be emotional for Arya, it will be tense for Sansa. According to EW, "Sansa isn’t thrilled that Jon bent the knee to his fancy new Targaryen girlfriend, at least not at first."

In a preview of its 2019 projects, HBO included a brief clip of Jon's return to Winterfell in Season 8. He gets a less-than-enthusiastic embrace from Sansa, hinting she isn't too happy about his guest(s). A later teaser shows her telling Dany, "Winterfell is yours, Your Grace."

Daenerys aware of making a good impression on Jon's family, though. "I like to think that it’s like Meet the Parents," Clarke told EW. "It’s like: ‘I hope they like me. This dude’s wicked. It’s a real good thing we got going on. He’s the final piece. We’re destined for greatness and world domination is a breath away.’ And so I need to be like: ‘Can I braid your hair, Sansa? Little Arya, come over here, let’s play some cricket.’ So there’s that. And then, very, very quickly, it’s like: ‘Wait, is it just me, or do they hate me?'"

Here’s what else we know about what happens in Season 8:

Sansa and Ayra team up.

Although we saw them “fighting” in Season 7, the Stark sisters will join forces for the final season, according to the actors who play them.

“It’s not often you see a character siding with Sansa who’s not manipulating her,” Maisie Williams told Entertainment Weekly. “Last season it was really tough for Sansa because Jon was thinking with his penis and it kind of made Sansa look bitter. This season you see Arya teaming with Sansa and sometimes calling out Jon. It felt nice and powerful to stand next to Sophie [Turner].”

“Everyone’s a threat,” Williams added to TVLine. “We’re done trusting people. We’re done with being pushed over. We finally managed to scrape our family back together somewhat, minus Jon.”

“We just have to protect that, whatever the cost,” Turner chimed in.

Arya will take part in her first battle.

Although she’s killed many, assassin Arya Stark has still not participated in one of GoT’s epic battles. That will change this season, as some of our favorite characters band together to fight the Army of the Dead. We even saw a hint of her in combat in the trailer, where she appears to fight with a spear. “I feel like I’ve always been a part of this big show but in terms of being part of the episodes that really define us, this is my first taste of it,” Williams told EW.

Sam will fight, too.

Actor John Bradley explained that he his character, Samwell Tarly, will have a hand in the fighting as well. “He couldn’t talk that White Walker around with logic,” Bradley told EW. “He’s discovered when violence is the only answer, it is an answer. His relation with Gilly and Baby Sam has gotten to the point where he’ll protect them at all costs.”

The outlet separately reported that in one scene, Bradley’s Sam “wields a sword at undead wight attackers.”

Jaime only trusts Tyrion.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) told TVLine that his character “gave his word to his brother [Tyrion Lannister], who is the only person he truly trusts.” He added, “Of course, together with Brienne.”

He also rides north.

Fans saw Jaime leaving Cersei at King’s Landing to help fight the Army of the Dead at the end of Season 7. Seeing the wight in the finale was “frightening” and Jaime “believed it,” Waldau told TVLine. “He’s going up there for those reasons. I don’t think he goes to spite Cersei or because he’s angry with her. It’s not to do with that.”

In the trailer, we also see him presumably up north, saying, “I promised to fight for the living. I intend to keep that promise.”
